One of the most common issues in the field of orthodontics, both for children and adults, is crooked or misaligned teeth. We see many of these issues at Redwood Orthodontics, and we have several approaches to help fix them.

One of these approaches? Helping prevent crooked or misaligned teeth. There are situations where these simply can’t be helped, but there are plenty of others where the right tactics and habits can go a long way toward preventing these issues.

Hygiene Habits

Poor dental hygiene is among the primary causes of misaligned teeth. When these habits lead to gum disease in young children, decay and bacteria can penetrate the gum – even affected dormant adult teeth along with current temporary teeth. Proper brushing techniques and habits are vital for both children and adults. For children, brushing gently on the gums as teeth grow in is vital for getting them used to the sensation. Getting them on the right program early can go a long way.

Genetics – Catch it Early

As we noted, there are certain situations where the risk for crooked teeth can’t be avoided – it’s a genetic issue for some people. If you have a misaligned bite or crooked teeth, or did as a child, your children might be at higher risk.

In these cases, that just means you need to be even more vigilant. Focus on healthy habits and try to explain why it’s so important to your child. In addition, these healthy habits can help prevent some of the resulting side effects that are common with crooked teeth.

Thumb Sucking

One particular habit to excise from your child’s list of activities? Thumb sucking. Unusual pressure on gums can be a major cause of crooked teeth, and sucking on thumbs is among the causes of this kind of pressure. In general, weening your child away from sucking on objects early will reduce the risk of crooked teeth.

Early Tooth Fairy

If your child loses a tooth early on, make sure you book an appointment with us at Redwood Orthodontics. Early tooth loss can lead to surrounding teeth growing into the empty space, which sets the mouth up for big issues when adult teeth begin entering the mouth. This is also the case when trauma or decay causes tooth loss. However, the right dental attention can help keep tabs on the surrounding teeth for signs of damage or disposition.
