If you’ve completed Invisalign treatments for your mouth, you’re well on your way to getting that perfect smile you’ve always wanted. Invisalign is one of the top mouth alignment treatments out there, and one we’re happy to provide at Redwood Orthodontics.

Caring for the mouth after Invisalign treatments are finished is still a vital task to completing the process, however. Neglecting things just because aligner trays are no longer in your mouth could cause much of their positive work to be undone, and could lead to costly and time-consuming issues. Here are some things to keep in mind as you care for your teeth after Invisalign treatments.

Retainers

Many patients will need a retainer after Invisalign treatment – this will be based on your individual situation. Retainers can help prevent the teeth from shifting back into their original position.

If a retainer is recommended, use it per the directions given. Also, look to avoid hard, crunchy foods for the first few weeks while your teeth adjust. For children and younger patients, retainers are generally used until the wisdom teeth either come in or are extracted from the mouth.

Brushing and Flossing

These must be daily parts of any oral care, but especially for post-Invisalign care. Your gums may be more sensitive directly after treatment has finished, and this could last for a few weeks. Consider a warm salt water rinse if brushing or flossing are giving you discomfort. Also consider a sensitive toothpaste – teeth might be sensitive after being protected for so long by Invisalign aligner trays.

Checkups

It’s also important to remember that you still need regular dental checkups after Invisalign treatments – you’d be surprised how often folks forget this. Cleanings and X-rays make sure the gums and teeth stay healthy and don’t revert back to previous issues.
